TOOLIJOOA RESIDENCE

Located on 190 acres in picturesque South Coast dairy country, a late 1800s dairy cottage has undergone a transformative renovation. With the ocean nearby as its backdrop, this project marks our second collaboration with these clients, building on the foundation of our work together on their Southern Highlands home.

The project combines careful restoration with a considered extension, with the aim of creating a true haven that feels warm, textural, and grounded in natural materials. It was important that the home respected the character of the original cottage, while evolving to better support contemporary living on a working coastal property.

Our role encompassed full Interior Design, guiding the interior direction from concept through to detailed resolution. We were responsible for all material and finish selections, including hard surfaces, fixtures and fittings, ensuring a cohesive and layered palette throughout. The lighting scheme supports both the functional needs of the home and its overall atmosphere, pairing original, restored elements with more contemporary fittings in the newer areas. In parallel, we designed and detailed all custom joinery, with a focus on proportion, durability, and everyday practicality.

The family’s lifestyle, shared with their adult children and centred around the demands of a working property, and a busy family business, called for materials and finishes that could withstand daily use. At the same time, it was important that these choices still came together to create a home that feels considered and beautiful, and one that will continue to evolve with them over time.

The seamless addition to the original cottage gives the client a kitchen, hidden pantry, dining and living area, with views across the property from every angle.

Oak flooring, linen curtains, natural stone that introduces muted colour, and custom joinery keep the spaces both beautiful and functional

The original cottage was carefully brought back to life, and houses the primary bedroom, new ensuite, guest bedroom, and a separate cosy sitting space. Original floorboards were sanded and restained, and plasterwork and period detailing restored.

A calm transition between old and new. The original hallway with restored lighting, reconditioned flooring and period detailing leads to a new secondary entrance laid with tumbled limestone
